Costa Mesa Dentist Talks Tooth Sensitivity

What causes tooth sensitivity?

Do you experience an occasional zing throughout the day?  Sensitivity to hot and cold?  Or constant dull, achy pain?  These are all signs you are suffering from tooth sensitivity.  Tooth sensitivity can be very unpleasant and also be a sign of a more serious dental condition.  If you’re experiencing tooth pain, Orange County Dentist Dr. Jeremy Jorgenson can help!

Tooth Sensitivity causing Dental Pain

Tooth sensitivity can come in many forms and from many causes.  You can simply be sipping in air, taking a bit of your lunch, or trying to concentrate at work and you notice that something doesn’t feel right.  Tooth sensitivity, also called dentin hypersensitivity, can occur when the outer layers of the tooth, the enamel and cementum, become thin and expose the dentin layer underneath.  When dentin is exposed, the tooth root and nerve are closer to the surface and more likely to become irritated.

Advanced Dental Care’s School Supply Drive

CAAHF and Advanced Dental Care

Annual School Supply Drive

For all of us at Advanced Dental Care, being leaders in our community is really important to us.  We are always looking for ways to be involved in Costa Mesa and our neighboring Orange County communities.  A few years ago we saw a school supply drive on Instagram from a local nonprofit called Chava’s Angels At Heart Foundation (CAAHF).  We immediately reached out to the organization and were contacted by the founder of Chava’s Angels, Nadia Flores.

Chavas Angels At Heart Foundation Santa Ana

CAAHF‘s mission is to provide quality services to at-risk youths, at-risk young adults, and low-income families.  CAAHF is committed to education, exposing, and ensuring client success.  One important program that CAAHF puts on each August is a School Supply Drive for Santa Ana students.  According to CAAHF, the Santa Ana Unified School District has approximately 56,000 students of which 91% qualify for free or reduced meals.

Back to School Supplies

For the last two years, Advanced Dental Care has been a proud supporter of Chava’s Angels.  We are again hosting our in-office School Supply Drive and striving  to outdo the number of school supply donations we received last year (a whole carload full!!).

This year we’ve already filled once box in our lobby and have had generous donations mailed to us from all over the country!  Wow!  We are always amazed at the generosity of our patients, family, and friends!

At Advanced Dental Care, we don’t just treat our patients, we get to know them!  It’s one of the greatest perks of our job.  Our patients are amazing people, doing amazing things in our communities and we want you to know about them.

Our first Featured Patient Spotlight is actually two patients: Devin and Courtney Lucas!  The Lucas’ are no stranger to the Costa Mesa community.  They are the local business owners of Lucas Real Estate and active supporters of the Costa Mesa community.  We first met the Lucas’ at the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce.  We are so glad we get to know them.  Now they are loyal patients, real estate gurus, and oh-so-happy new parents!

Understanding Your Explanation of Benefits (EOB)

Costa Mesa Dentist talks understanding your explanation of benefits (EOB)

By Libby Dahl, Office Manager

Delta Dental Sample EOB

Delta Dental Sample EOB

We accept all PPO insurances at Advanced Dental Care!  If you are using dental insurance at your dental visits, you will receive an Explanation of Benefits or EOB either by mail or email shortly after your visit.  EOBs can be confusing, because they look a lot like invoices (and nobody likes invoices!).  An EOB is provided to patients covered by insurance to explain what services were rendered by a provider and what the insurance company paid for on behalf of the patient.

Learning how to read EOBs is very useful to making sure you are aware of what your insurance company covers for you and instances where they did not pay for a service.  A standard dental EOB will have the subscriber’s name, the patient’s name, your member ID, and the claim number.  It is important to make sure that your information is correct so there are no mix-ups with another patient.

National Heart Health Month

February 3, 2016

Advanced Dental Care is partnering with the American Heart Association this February to celebrate National Heart Month!

All month long we will be bringing awareness of heart health and the link to your oral health.  Maintaining good oral health can directly affect your heart health and vice versa.  Sometimes we see that if a patient presents with active periodontal disease, they also have been diagnosed with high blood pressure or another heart disease.  This is because the body is a system, and every subsystem is interconnected.

One of the main indicators of our oral and overall health is our gums.  Regular exams by your dentist and hygienist can help detect abnormalities early on.  Periodontal disease, for example, progresses in stages and when caught early can be treated more easily.

Gum Disease costa mesa caWhen bacteria builds up on teeth and migrates below the gum line, the bacteria can irritate the gums causing early stage periodontal disease.  When left untreated by a dental professional, the disease can quickly and easily progress to more advanced stages creating pockets.  Pockets above 3mm in depth are cause for concern.  Like all dental disorders, the sooner the condition can be treated, the better case for successful recovery.
