If you have dentures in Costa Mesa, then you may already know the benefits of having your full smile back. This tooth replacement is customized with you in mind, so it should be completely comfortable to wear. That said, if they are a new pair or a bit older, then you may notice that you have more sores developing than usual. Here’s why and what you can do to get relief from these painful spots.

How Come I Got Denture Sores in the First Place?

As was mentioned above, a brand-new pair of dentures can lead to sores. That’s because your mouth isn’t entirely used to having them in. Your gums might become irritated, but it should go away once you are done with this transition period.

If you have had your prosthetic for a while, then it might be ill-fitting. This can also lead to this complication, as there are new pressure points on the soft tissues of your mouth.

For a few people, there might be a stray piece of food that’s the problem! It might’ve lodged underneath your restoration and is pushing against your gums. Popcorn, seeds, and nuts are a few snacks that are common culprits for this.

What Can I Do to Get Relief from My Denture Sores?

With that said, you should first get rid of the cause of your sores before treating them. That way, they are less likely to come back. If a new pair of dentures is the problem, then give yourself grace. It can take about two weeks to a month for some people to get adjusted, but if it’s taking longer, then consider talking to your dentist. You should also reach out to them for an ill-fitting prosthetic. They can reline them to give you a snug fit once again.

Don’t forget to brush your full smile as well. Make sure you scrub all sides to get rid of plaque that can be trouble as well. Once you do, try out these tips to relieve any painful spots you have:

  • Do warm saltwater rinses to reduce inflammation.
  • Take over-the-counter medications as needed; just follow the directions on the bottle.
  • Soak your dentures overnight in a special cleanser or water.

Do I Need to Visit My Dentist About My Sores?

In general, people with this tooth replacement don’t typically need to see their dentist about their sores. However, if you notice they are getting bigger, show signs of infection (like discoloration), or last for longer than two weeks, then go ahead and give them a call. That way, you can ensure there’s no underlying problem that needs to be checked out.
