What is your tooth pain telling you?

March 16, 2017

By Dr. Jeremy Jorgenson

Tooth Pain can be a PAIN, but there is a reason why our bodies try to notify us that something is wrong.  Tooth pain can be an indication of infection, irritation, injury, or decay. It can be lingering, persistent, sharp, dull, off and on, but just altogether awful!

When you experience tooth pain, it is best to get a professional opinion to ensure that you address dental issues immediately.  Waiting for tooth pain to go away on its own will undoubtedly lead to a more complex, and sometimes more costly, treatment later.

Anatomy of a Tooth

To explain tooth pain, you should first know more about how a tooth is structured.  infected-inflamed-pulp-tissue

The tooth is composed of layers.  The outermost layer, the enamel, is the hardest layer and the first defense in protecting the inner pulp or root from decay and infection.

A variety of factors including poor oral hygiene habits, lack of regular dental exams, diet, genetics, etc., all play a role in slowly eroding the protective enamel later.  As the enamel erodes, the softer, more sensitive layers inside the tooth become exposed.  Some patients experience pain with little to no enamel erosion and others don’t feel anything until the decay or infection has reached all the way down to the pulp or root.

This is why regular dental visits are so important.  Your dentist can inform you about decay or infection before it reaches the point of severe pain, or worse, more invasive, costly dental procedures that are required to try to save your tooth.  The worst outcome, of course, is loss of the tooth completely.

Treating Your Periodontal Disease

February 8, 2017

periodontal disease costa mesa dentist advanced dental care best dentist in orange countyYou’ve just found out you have Periodontal Disease. Now What?

Don’t worry!  The most important thing is knowing about your condition and having a knowledgeable and experienced dental team to get your gums back to optimal health!  The Advanced Dental Care team in Costa Mesa, CA has the solutions for you!

Periodontal Disease is an active bacterial infection of the gum tissue in our mouth.  Once bacteria has burrowed in between our gum tissue and teeth it begins to flourish.  This bacteria inflames our gums and eats away at the bone holding our teeth in place.  No good!  Left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to more systemic inflammation, infections, and eventual tooth loss.  At Advanced Dental Care, we provide same day diagnosis and treatment of Periodontal Disease.  This may include a combination of Scaling and Root Planing (SRP), Laser Bacterial Reduction (LBR), and Oral Irrigation.

You may have heard your dental hygienist calling out numbers during your last cleaning appointment.. “2-3-2” “4-3-3” “5-6-4”.  If your dental hygienist didn’t explain the procedure to you, this is called Periodontal Probing and Charting or Periodontal Measurements.  Periodontal Probing and Charting is one of the hygienist’s most important tools for determining the condition of your gums, what type of cleaning you need, and measuring the success of the treatment on subsequent appointments. Two of the most common conditions in dentistry include Periodontal Disease and Crooked Teeth.  Periodontal Disease is an active infection in the gums that must be treated by a professional.  A common misconception is that a patient can brush or floss a little extra, but toothbrushes and floss can not reach the bacteria that have now burrowed pockets around our teeth.  When left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to a number of other conditions including tooth loss.  By using traditional procedures such as Scaling and Root Planing combined with our advanced technology diode lasers and medicinal irrigation we can rid you of the bacteria that is causing the infection!
